The Power of Your Mind: Excitment for Life!

The Power of Your Mind: Excitement for Life!
by Gregg Turner

The Power of Your Mind Series
Today: Are you Excited about Life?

I recently had a client that was concerned about “low excitement levels” that were being experienced in life. As I explored this and did some post session review, it became clear this is a situation that impacts many people.

Now, I am NOT talking about “over the moon” jumping up and down excitement. And if that is the way it is for you, Great! Many people seem to lose some of the “zest” for “excitement” as they get older.

This image is from http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/images/view_photog.php?photogid=2125

Some of this is something one can tend to buy into. As children, most every thing is a new experience, which brings out natural excitement from within us.

Think about the things that you or those around you get excited about. Often it is about something that is new or that you’ve experienced before. Isn’t it? The Big event, the major accomplishment, the goal scored, that new restaurant, that vacation or trip to a new place, that new person in your life, the new baby, that new job or new hobby, that new home, that new car or other items.

After you’ve “been there and done that”, what happens? Usually the initial “excitement” wanes and decreases. It becomes part of a memory, an experience completed. The more “experienced” some become, the less excited they are about things in general. This can be deflate-ting, IF we allow it to occur.

What is one of thing that caused you excitement in the past? Imagine being back in that situation, right now! How did it feel? What did you sound like when you were in that state? What other sights and sounds were present? How did you feel? Were there smells in the air? What actions were you taking? How did your body feel? These meditations will bring back aspects of that very same feeling, sensation, and excitement. The mind will create the same feeling from our memories as from the actual event. This is a version of what is also called “anchoring”. Sometimes it takes some practice, and sometimes it occurs more naturally.

It’s funny how when we practise gratitude and appreciation on a regular basis we become more excited about life.  This works because you are actually re-experiencing some of the same exciting experiences, feelings, sights and sounds. So it would be a Very Good idea to do so, wouldn’t you agree?

Remembering to remember and focusing on those positive memories allows us to re-access the same experience. Dreams can show this to us easily as well.
So, how about, after you read this paragraph, let your eyes close and take 3 deep and full breaths, then just imagine, see, hear and feel that experience or positive event in your mind’s eye. You can meditate or visualize that situation and as you do so, in a fully engaged way, you will start to re-establish that same feeling and situation. (You also do this with negative events too, but why bother?)

One of the many cool things about this easy exercise is that, there are different degrees or aspects of excitement. Stress is a form of excitement and if you are focusing on the stuff you don’t want or like, you will not be experiencing the type of excitement you really want to be experiencing. By becoming more and more aware of what your thoughts are and what is going on within yourself, you become more able to shift into the “excitement” mode that serves you best. Your thoughts and memories become even more powerful.

What are your dreams, goals and vision for the future? If it does not excite you, what can you do about it? You can start to think about the dreams, vision goals, (past-present or future), that get you excited. Whatever that feeling is for you! However it looks best for you. The best possible sounds around you.

The stronger that “mental muscle” becomes, the better it will serve you. The more visits you make to the “house of your mind”, the more you practise guiding your thoughts, the stronger those “habits” will become. That means the more excited you will become as well. Your future is truly exciting!

What and how your looking at life is will be a factor in your “Excitement for Life”!
Might as well make your thoughts and excitement the ones you like the best!

With Good Wishes, Gregg

PS: How can I best assist You? If you don’t know then that is a good place to start! :o )

The Power of Your Mind: Time to Move Forward? By Gregg Turner PhD

Is it Your Time to Move Forward?

Is there some situation in your life “holding” you back? Do you think there is a person holding you back? Are you looking for more in life? Is it your time to move forward? If you were free to move forward, would you?

These are interesting and important questions for you to consider. Maybe you are being held back and don’t even know it! Maybe you are just now starting to think about moving forward.

If you are reading this, then you are already on the journey forward because you are looking for answers, perspectives or willing to expand your horizons. So congratulations!!!
No person, place or thing can really ever hold you back. The ‘holding back’ is always within you.

This may sound untrue at first. Situations and people around us can trigger internal thoughts for sure. Some situations or people are toxic, some not what we really want to be part of. Some may be part of your family or an aspect of a job or perhaps part of the “system” that you live in.

I believe we are the only ones that can really hold ourselves back. Even in certain circumstances when there is an external force or physical limitation, we all have the power to decide the thoughts and attitudes we will have. You can change your thinking process. Be aware that for sure, there is previous conditioning, based on past experiences that influence or even control you. Those can be called beliefs or judgements or just ‘stinkin thinking’, and it can be changed!

Are you reacting to “things” and “stuff” (very technical… :o ) ) around you? Do you get upset or feel frustrated or trapped? If so, you are running some programs, old tapes, beliefs or previous hurts or experiencing “false evidence appearing real” (aka FEAR).
Are you feeding, giving power, and strength to something outside of you and do not even know it? Is it something external and you will be in some “reaction mode” instead of in the control seat and in “response-able mode”?

It may be as simple as not feeling as happy as you wish to be or being frustrated at what is occurring in your life or always seeing the nastier sides of things. Wanting something different and deciding that it is time to move forward is part of the step. Kind of like knowing what you don’t want helps you to focus on what you do want.

The word FOCUS is an important one. It is your focus, what you see, imagine, feel, sense, hear, and experience.  It has a Huge impact on what you end up feeling.

By shifting focus is part of the moving forward process. Sometimes we need to change our physical to change the internal. By this I mean check out your physiology.

By paying attention you can notice how are you holding or carrying your body. Are you breathing deeply (as you really need to be)? Are you slumped over and limiting your lung capacity? Are you holding and walking around like a happy progressive person or the opposite?

By adjusting your physical way of being you can help to start to adjust your internal – emotional or psychological. Including your full deep and complete breathing brings oxygen to your brain to help with clearer and more accurate thinking.  And this leads to actions.

Looking at and examining things from a different point of view is useful. Try pretending to see from the point of view of the person you would like to be.  In doing this you can work to become that person who you want to be.

Or maybe it is like the view it would be from a mountain top on a clear day vs. being deep in the forest where you are unable to see what’s around the next corner.

Or maybe it is like going into a calm neutral position or state, instead of trying to ram forward or force a situation.

When you think and take a look at things from a different perspective it is almost like experiencing, seeing, hearing and feeling it in a totally different manner. As you do so it will create a direction to move forward.

Where do you want to go? What do you want to experience, feel, see and hear around you? Where are you wanting to move forward?

Would it be okay to let go and make the best of the current experience, as you start to create pictures, sounds and feelings about what it will be like as you have and be? Are you ready to move forward and achieve that next step along your journey? I hope your answer is a resounding YES! Every day is an opportunity. We might as well make it a great adventure! And yes it does and will get better and better!

To Your Success and With Most Excellent Wishes, Gregg

The Power of Your Mind: Your future is NOW!

The Power of Your Mind Series  Today: Your future is now!

You might as well make it Good!

As the New Year approaches many people think about the future and about plans to make changes.

Every year right after New Year’s I notice that my fitness center is really busy and in about 2 weeks it goes back to normal volume. With the regulars and a few new folks staying with it.

It makes me wonder why people do that! Why do people sabotage themselves? Why do people wait until the new year for a new start? Maybe this would be a good article for the June or July!

How do you decide what you want? Some people just “know it”; some people “get a feeling”; some people “get a picture in their mind”; some people “talk it out” or have an “internal conversation”; some people “analyze and dissect it”. There are different ways to do so based on your internal communication and processing/learning styles. Let me know if you would like to learn more about that.

Some people wait until they find something they truly like and move towards it, while others wait to find something they don’t like, and then they seek to find a way out of it. Both of these paths can serve you. And I would suggest that the more proactive you become the easier and more fun the journey and the faster you will realize the outcomes you really want.

Start with taking the first of 3 deep BREATHs. It begins a relaxation, calming and internal connection process. It helps with blood flow to the Brain, therefore clearer thinking and decisions that will serve you better.  Breathing is one of the most powerful and rapid ways to take affect your thoughts and therefore your life.  It’s one of the simple components of my Victoria BC counselling sessions.

After a few moments of breathing, consciously relaxing and instructing the mind to relax the body, you start to create the avenues to reflect, in a calm manner. What do you really want? What do you really need? What would make you feel truly happy and content? When would you like to see it become reality? What is the first ACTION step to take? What are the next and the next and the next ACTION steps after you begin? How will you know you have achieved your goal? How will you feel, hear, taste, experience, see or know when you have reached it?

What emotions or feelings will flow through your body? The more connected you become with the emotions the more connected you become to realizing what you “want”, “need” or “achieve”. The power of being “positively emotionally involved” with your dreams, goals or desires, is significant. It makes you more likely to achieve them. When you paint the picture in your minds eye about what you want, in full colour, full sound and full feelings/emotions, you can more fully help yourself keep that focus.

“Carry on and Stay calm.”  This is a mantra one of my clients shared with me. Think about it… keeping calm and carrying on! In order to achieve any worthy endeavour we must keep on, carry on and being calm, in order to achieve it in the easiest and best of ways. If there is drama and stress it may not be your worthy goal or direction.. or perhaps you are caught up in some internal “drama”, “belief” or “judgement”. You will know because those do not feel as good and as pleasant as the ones when you are in your place of connection to your truth.

Sometimes people need help to reach that place or understanding. Find yourself a professional to assist you, read some books, meditate, and take some action.

Action is integral ….. there is a saying that goes like… “when you pray, move your feet!”. Action to help you get your results, ANY TIME of the YEAR. It all starts with a thought, idea, reflection, which created your decisions. Once you truly decide on something that is truly best for you and You Decide to own it, YOU will make it so. You will take the appropriate thoughts to lead to your best of actions. Plus you will learn on the way! It is the journey or adventure that leads to your experience and wisdom.

Once you truly decide you will be one of the people who will carry on with your decision no matter what. It will be like something that can not be stopped because it is truly a part of you and your highest good!

So Why not start Now? Why wait until Jan 1st? Make Your New future starting Now and Keep on Carrying On and Being Calm, while you Be, Have it and DO the action to receive and get it!

With Good wishes for your New Year Now and Blessings of the Season, Gregg

React or Respond – Your Option

React or Respond – What do you want to be?

By Gregg Turner PhD – November 28, 2011

How do you deal with challenging situations?   How do you cope with things that go on in your life that you may not “like”?  Do you react to people and situations that occur, especially when you feel, think, hear, and see them differently than others?

These are some good reflective questions here.  Let us start with the difference between “reacting” and “responding”.  “Reacting” is like a pure reflex to a situation, sometimes it serves us, but most of the time it does not.  It is a conditioned reaction based on your beliefs, judgments, interpretations, and sometimes just stuff we make up.  Done without thought and usually without any awareness or control.  So what is the alternative?  It is to Respond!  Responding has a thoughtfulness to it that reacting does not.  Something that puts you in control.  The word “response” can be looked at as “response able”.  Able to respond, instead of just reacting all over the place.  You will see and notice people “reacting” in most places you go.

The awareness that there is a difference, gives you a key to be able to “respond” as you choose.  As you choose!  A response is like a decision to go in a certain direction, so to speak.  Decisions about how and where you want to “respond”, gives you power and freedom over your situations.

In life things occur that we do not always understand.  Whether it is a situation or a person.  Often those mis-understandings are occurring because others involved are all “reacting”.  As you make a decision to “respond” you will feel and be more content, calm and in control of you.

I can remember “reacting” to other drivers on the highway, who had driving styles that were different than mine.  Maybe they were really slow, or were not using their turn signals or they were cutting people off.  I use to “react” by getting ticked off at them, sometimes honking and most times talking to myself and getting frustrated or even mad at them.  One day I realized that I was “reacting” and decided to take a deep breath and relax my muscular tension which I had created.  That started the process of moving to “responding” in that circumstance.  It w

I look at things from a detached perspective (like observing myself from a distance).  I realized that it was only my perspective, my interpertations of how it “should” be.  As I breathed and relaxed I provided more blood flow to the brain, therefore started making my own “decision”.  Deciding how I wanted to “respond” to the situation.  Before that I wasn’t really taking control of my circumstances. Afterwards, I had less stress and less tension. I was happier; I was back in control of me; I was calmer, and as I responded  I would think a safer and more “responsible” “interactor” in life.

Interesting to note that the word “responsible” or “response able” have nothing to do with “a knee jerk reaction” and everything to do with “responding”.

Think, feel or just imagine how you go through your day.  As you start to pay attention to situations in your life and how you “react” or “respond”, you start to gain more insights about you.  Providing yourself with ways to “respond” in ways that will serve you, others and your future.

The more often we create this mental habit, the better it gets.  And the better it gets the better it gets!  If you know what I mean.

So by “paying attention”, noticing your “triggers of reaction”, you can start to understand “it”, see it for what “it” is, hear and feel differently about “it” and start to change “it”.  It can be as simple as starting with a deep breath.

You will know if you are “reacting” because it will show up in your body and mind with being tense, uncomfortable, angry, sad, or something along those lines.  Taking a deep breath starts the process of letting it go.  Remembering how you “want” to feel and ”respond” or what is the best case, helps to give you a direction to follow.

This can apply to all areas of your life!  Why not think about it, explore it, breath with it and see, notice and experience how the “situations” change because you are responding.

I hope this helps you to respond to the challenges that life gives you.  All the best,

Gregg Turner

The Power of Your Mind: The Power of Thankfulness

The Power of Your Mind Series

Today: Thanks and Forgiving!

For people in Canada, this is our Thanksgiving.

So Happy Thanksgiving to All!

When you think about it, every day is a good day to offer thanks, gratitude, and appreciation.  Why not?  Every time we express our thanks we are contributing to a positive energy flow in our body and also for those around us.

From a physical perspective, thanks creates more calmness in our muscles and with less stress/tension and more relaxation we automatically provide better circulation in our bodies.  With better circulation we have improved blood flow to the brain, which in turn provides clearer thinking and more internal balance.   Plus there are a number of positive chemicals and hormones being activated and awakened within us.   That’s pretty good stuff for just expressing a thankful thought and appreciation, if you ask me!  Even a heart felt “Thanks So Much”, will have that effect as well.  Again it is not just about You!  :o ))   It is also impacts people around us, animals, and there are even studies showing changes in plants!

Thanks-for-Forgiving

“Thanks-for-Forgiving” (kind of sounds and flows like “ThanksGiving”) and is a great place to continue thinking about the physical power of thankfulness.  Releasing and letting go of past hurts and emotional pain, also has huge benefits for the body, such as improving your immune system support.

 What is forgiveness?

What is forgiving?  Webster’s would say something like: to stop blame and grant pardon; Synonyms: accept apology, acquit, allow for, amnesty, bear no malice, bear with, bury the hatchet, efface, kiss and make up, laugh off, let bygones be bygones, let it go, let pass, let up on, make allowance, purge.  Some interesting perspectives here like:  “bear no malice” and “bury the hatchet”, remind us of peace and harmony.  These are always good things I think!

What is the opposite of forgiving?  To accuse, blame, censure, charge, punish.  Some of which are likened to attack, injure and do harm.  This should lead us to wonder about how these actions serve you?  Why should you not forgive?  Dwell on that for a minute, and see if you can actually come up with a good reason.  Something tells me that you won’t find one.  Especially since it produces tension, stress, poor circulation, decreases immune systems, plus a lot of other things that you don’t want.

So What can You Do?

So, where ever you are in the world, what would happen if you looked, listened, thought of and got a grasp on even a little bit more Thanks?  What are some of the things you are thankful and appreciative for?  What could you be more thankful for? Perhaps it is for aspects of your physical body… maybe it is for being able to get around… Maybe for a meal….  Maybe for the computer you are using…. What about for sunshine, “rainshine” or an aspect of nature?  What about having this brief evanescent glimpse of a life that lingers in time so delicately? When you think about it there are lots of things to be thankful for.  The same goes for people in your life as well.  Maybe it is for having a friend, partner, family member, co-worker, or just pleasant customer services.

Imagine what happens when you forgive, releasing pain and burdens of the past.  Move to looking, feeling, thinking, and hearing about things to be thankful for.  Even if it is just to learn about something you do not want, which helps you to focus on what you do want!  This is something we’ll think about more in future articles…

As we all forgive and are thankful a little bit more all the time, not only does it free and help us as individuals, it frees and helps those around us, especially the person you are frustrated with, whom are usually “loved ones”!  This is because it puts you into a stronger, safer and more content place.  This means you are healthier, happier and a lot more fun to be around too!  Even for yourself (you become more fun).  And that means that you are in a flow of abundance.

Look around for small examples in your own life, of things to be thankful for.  Take a Deep and Full Breath right now.  Listen to the clear positive voice within.  Express your appreciation and gratitude to others, even for something small.

Smile more.  Allow the feeling and perspectives of forgiveness to flow from and to you.  Think about happy moments in your life.  Remember those with thanks.  Imagine what it would be like to be in a state of Forgiveness and Thanks as you travel through life.

The Power of Your Mind: Beyond Right or Wrong

The Power of Your Mind Series

Today: Beyond Right or Wrong!

I recently came across a quote that gave me a powerful idea!  I modified it to this: “Beyond the place of Right Doing or Wrong Doing, there is a beautiful field that is full of opportunities, fun, joy, ideas, potential, life and well being…”

This is a powerful concept when you apply it to your life! I’m going to ask you to take a moment to really embrace this idea.

Now, take 3 nice deep breaths to relax and then take a moment to just contemplate the concept right now, after each slow and rhythmic breath.

Now, what does it mean to you?  What does your Beautiful Field beyond doing right or doing wrong, look, feel, or sound like?  Is it a process you can start to explore?

I have often seen, heard, and met people who live life deeply stuck in what they believe to be Right.  That they have become deaf, blind and numb (sometimes dumb) to any other possibilities.

Just see and hear what is on the news on any given day.  People so stuck in their perspectives and concepts and beliefs that they want to kill anyone who thinks, believes, speaks, or sees differently than them.

Nonetheless change is exciting!  In contemplating your “beauty-field” new options, choices, insights are just beyond any stuck thinking.

Imagine what that can mean to you.  How can you apply this?  What are ways to show by example and to help make a positive difference for your life, those around you and even beyond any thing you can conceive of?

Everyone has these fields available!  Many have not experienced, seen, felt, heard or explored these fields yet.  But it is there for each and every individual.

Take the time to look, contemplate, breathe, relax and open the door of your mind’s eye, to the “beautiful fields of possibility”.

You will find that as you open, explore and experience the choice of possibility thinking, you can find those fields of joy and beauty.

And yes this is a choice!  Like so many other things in life an act of will is the source.  Some may say “Oh I can’t do that” or “that is not real”.

But Why Not?

We have choices and options… what was a truth yesterday may no longer be true today or tomorrow.

Is the earth Flat?  Is our planet the center of the universe?  Of course Not!

Yet someone use to believe it was.

Are there certain things that were “right” for you in the past and not so today?  Of course there are.  Based on learning, life experiences and insights.

What about things that you believed wrong?  Sometimes they were proven “right”.

What are your options?  How could someone else look at the same situation so differently?  What would a brilliant advisor or consultant say to you?

There are possible solutions to any situation.  Even if you do not believe it possible.  As one let’s go of the “how to” and starts to realize the possibility, even if it is a remote possibility, it can become reality.

Our Concepts of What’s Possible Can (and Do) Change

No one really knew how to get to the moon until President Kennedy, decided that we could and would get there!  Then it became so thereafter.

What are some of the choices and potential for the Beautiful fields of your mind?

I leave with that thought.  Share below, and let’s continue the conversation.

To Your Success and cultivation of those fields!

The Power of Hope

The Power of Your Mind Series

Today: The Power of Being Hopeful

Hope is defined in the dictionary as:  1. The feeling that, what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best.

(The opposite would be to give up hope!  Of course that does not work out very well for us.)

As a verb it is something (or a feeling) to look forward to, with desire and reasonable confidence.   Or something to believe, desire, or trust.

When we look at it in this light, being full of Hope, is a good thing!  Especially when you consider the opposite! Hope can help us to keep moving forward.  To keep on wanting to achieve our goals.  To “Keep on Keeping On”, so to speak.

Keeping “on” sounds, feels, and looks better than shutting “off”, especially when it ties into our progressions.  Personally, Spiritually, Health, Business, and Success.  Of course there are times and ways that we all need to “calm the mind”, to “relax”, “de-stress” and “create balance”.   That is different from shutting off completely.

Being “Hopeful” helps us to follow many of the Universal laws.  One being the Law of Attraction.  There is certainly a lot of information out there about that.  Very much like the earlier blog, about the seeds we plant in the garden of our minds.

Being hopeful for the: Best Health. Best Relationship.  Best Abundance. Best Income.  Best Success.

.

“Being Hopeful for the Best of whatever you want helps you to take action to actually achieve what it is that you want.

Every action starts with a thought or idea of what you want.  And to be “hopeful” helps you to realize what it is that you really want.  In light of this, here is an important question to consider:

What are your Hopes and Dreams?

Remember every reality starts with a thought, idea, or what I will call a “hope – thought”!

Some people may say that being hopeful is unrealistic or too idealistic or “pie in the sky”.  In most cases, the things we are hopeful for are already things that are within our abilities to achieve.  Being hopeful for more money, sure is realistic and a good place to start to think, act, speak, learn and discover ways that can actually work for you.  Being hopeful for a happy relationship can help you start to realize the things that are important to you.  Even help you take steps to be happier and more appreciative.  Being Hopeful for a Healthy body can help you start or stay with exercise and wellness living (plus helps the body on a physiological level).  Being Hopeful for a positive and strong Mind can help you achieve goals you want to materialize.

Without hope people have given up.  It just makes good sense to be Hopeful.

What if your Hopes became your reality?

Of course that is what you want to have happen, isn’t it?

I encourage you to think about what you are hopeful to Be, Have, and Do in your own life.

It is often the starting place to begin to move forward towards whatever your life will become.  As we expand our personal horizons, or “Hopes” and start to take some “ACTIONS”, we certainly can start to achieve them.  You will begin the process to make the “hopes” a reality.  Especially as we continue to take steps forward over time.  You just never know exactly how long it will take to get there.   That is one of the reasons that “Keeping On” with the highest of ideals, goals, or “hopes” serves you well.  The actualization of what you “hope” for may only be one “hopeful thought” and ”action” away!

To Your Success and to Your “Hopes” realized!

The Power of Your Mind

The Power of Your Mind

I am inspired by the thought of how powerful our minds are and how we can actually achieve our highest of goals.

Sometimes I find that the achieving of a goal takes longer than I planned; or more accurately, longer than I wanted it too!  How about you?  I think we can all relate to this in some way.

So what do I, you, and we do about this challenge?  We deal with it in a plethora of different ways, from: the useful and productive to the ones that cause anxiety, stress, sadness or any number of negative emotions.

In nature the earth creates plants from the seeds that are planted… some weeds, some flowers, and some provide fruit.  Even some of the ‘weeds’ in our lives have a purpose or benefit.  It’s often simply a matter of how we look at an experience or how it speaks to us.  (We will explore that in more detail another time.)

What Mental ‘Seeds’ Are You Planting?

Let’s get back to the ‘seeds’ that we all plant in our minds.  What kind of fruit, flowers or weeds are you planting?  As soon as we start to Pay Attention, to observe, and to listen to what is going on in our heads, minds, and inner movies, we can begin to help guide ourselves to create the ‘crops’ that serve us best.  To create the harvest that we truly want.

That’s all well and good to say, but how does that happen?  Remember it can take some time and practice. For some it is very quick, for others there is more learning and practice needed, to create new ‘mental muscle’ habits!  Just like going to the gym, “inner, mental and mind fitness” needs to be exercised and developed.

You can start doing it by paying attention to the messages your mind sends you.  If something does not feel good, make sense, sound or look right, it is BIG Message to you.  A sign that it is a time to start thinking about what you do want!  And how to change it.

By starting to explore “What If”, “Possibility Thinking” or thinking about what sounds and looks good or how you really want to feel, you begin to plant a new crop. A crop that serves you in the best of ways!  This is when you truly begin to explore the power of your mind!

What Mental ‘Seeds’ Should You Be Planting?

What kind of crops and seeds do you really want to plant?  Once you start to plant the crops that you would really like to have and you water and care for them, they grow to be strong, fun, happy and productive!  As one of my mentors said, there is a season to sow and a season to reap, and it is never in the same season!

So, here’s the take away from this post: start thinking about your possibilities.  What are the positive avenues that your life can take from here?  What are you sowing?  From there your actions will follow and you can start the next steps in achieving your goals.

I think it was Steven Covey who said “begin with the end in mind”.  As is true with any wise quote, it can be applied to many aspects of our lives.
